A striking mid-century British tallboy chest of drawers, designed by Gunther Hoffstead for Uniflex circa 1960. Beautifully crafted in richly figured walnut and afromosia, the piece showcases the warm, distinctive grain and understated elegance characteristic of Hoffstead’s furniture for Uniflex.
The tallboy features a clean, architectural form with six graduated drawers, each retaining its original minimalist proportions and distinctive recessed finger-pull detailing. The broad drawer fronts are enhanced by continuous wood grain, while the darker afromosia accents add subtle contrast and definition.
Raised on an elegant tapered solid-wood stand with stretcher supports, the elevated base gives the substantial cabinet a light, sculptural appearance. The combination of exceptional timber, restrained geometry and thoughtful detailing makes this an excellent example of 1960s British modernist furniture.
