This is an original silk screen print released just after the completion of the original which measures in size up to 22 metres. Released by the prestigious French printing company Les Éditions Braun based in Paris this is a fine original example of early Silk Screen printing.
Born at Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the 27th January, 1921, Georges Mathieu first studied law and philosophy but turned to painting in 1942. He was the first artist in France to react violently against the forms of geometrical abstract painting and organised the earliest manifestations in support of an art set free from all the constraints and conventions of classical painting. This he defined and promoted as "lyrical abstraction". The creator of Tachism, Mathieu introduced into western art the idea of painting with great rapidity and made himself the champion of an aesthetic of calculated risk. This painting is nearly 20 feet wide. Its elegant handwriting recalls that of unintelligible oriental calli-graphy. The movement, the violence, and the red, black, gold and white colours suggest some medieval battle in which, as the artist (who loves historical titles) declares, the followers of Hugh Capet seethe in every direction.
