An exquisite original French Rococo mirror dating to the Louis XV period (1715–1774). Carved in solid oak, the frame is richly embellished with sculptural gesso ornamentation and finished in luminous 24-carat gold leaf, a hallmark of mid-18th-century French craftsmanship. The asymmetrical scrollwork and softly animated floral motifs exemplify the lightness, movement, and decorative sophistication that define the Rococo aesthetic under Louis XV.

Remarkably, this mirror retains its original mercury glass plate, offering a rare and evocative glimpse into the materials and techniques of the era. The subtle patina and gentle foxing enhance its authenticity and historic presence, lending depth and character that cannot be replicated. A museum-quality piece of exceptional decorative and historical significance, equally at home in a grand interior or a refined contemporary setting.

Dimensions:

Full height - 160

Mirror height - 124cm

Width - 95cm

Depth at ornamentations furthest point from wall - 35cm

Condition report:

The mirror is well preserved, the gold leafing is present and the oak and gesso remain finely in tact. There is clear foxing to the Mercury on the mirror as would be expected on a piece of this age, please refer to pics.
