A rare and visually electrifying piece of 1970s nightlife history, this vintage abstract mirror was custom-made in 1978 for the legendary Maximus Nightclub, a key venue in London’s vibrant underground scene. Designed specifically for performance artist and fashion icon Leigh Bowery, the mirror embodies the bold, theatrical energy of the era.
Crafted from vivid purple and red Lucite, the mirror features an asymmetrical, sculptural form—part art object, part functional decor. The high-gloss acrylic materials catch and reflect light dramatically, adding a sense of movement and surrealism that echoed Bowery’s flamboyant performances and persona.
Only two of these mirrors were ever made for the club, making them exceptionally rare. Both pieces were eventually sold through Sotheby’s, affirming their cultural and collectible significance.
This mirror is not only a statement piece of vintage design, but a tangible artifact of Leigh Bowery’s radical aesthetic and the explosive creativity of London’s late-70s club culture.
