This exceptional 6-seat dining suite is an original design by Giussepe Gibelli for Sormani, Italy (1953), showcasing the refined craftsmanship and elegant modernist aesthetic that defined mid-century Italian design.
The chairs are constructed in solid beech wood, meticulously ebonised by hand to achieve a deep, lustrous finish. Each seat is crafted from handmade Swiss sisal paper cord, woven from hand-harvested and cut rushes—a material renowned for both its beauty and durability, and regarded as one of the most desirable natural weaves available today, often commanding up to £500 per metre.
The dining table is a striking statement piece, supported by a sculptural tripod base in solid ebony, giving it both strength and elegance. Its surface is a finely figured burl maple top, expertly restored by a LAPADA-accredited specialist, ensuring the piece retains its original character while presenting in outstanding condition.
This rare suite embodies the timeless elegance of mid-century Italian design, balancing natural materials with architectural form. Both functional and highly collectible, it is a significant work by one of Italy’s noted designers and a perfect centrepiece for a discerning interior.
